I learned the other night that certain concepts are learned earlier. About 2 nights ago, Gavin and I were sitting on the couch when Gavin picked my hand up and bit my finger really hard. While he was doing this he looked like he was spaced out, like he was not really aware of what he was doing at the time, but he seemed to think it was kind of funny when I pulled back and said ouch.
At this moment, I am sure as you can all understand, I was pretty annoyed. I turned to Gavin and let him know that biting me was not funny at all. He of course tried to change the subject, once he new he was in trouble, but I did not let the issue drop. I made him look at the bite marks on my finger and told him, "That hurt mommy, that was ouchies." At this time Gavin looked at my finger and he really seemed to be thinking about what he had done. He tried to wipe away the teeth marks and I told him that he cant wipe them away. So then He thought about it some more. This is were I learned that kids figure out certain things on their own and early on. Gavin held his finger up to my mouth and said, "bite me mom." I looked at him and said, "No, I don't want to hurt Gavin." But he was persistent. He opened my mouth for me, put his finger in and then closed my mouth on his finger. I of course did not bite him and he said, "harder." He really seemed to want me to get even, so I put a little bit of pressure on his finger with my teeth. He pulled back in mock hurtfulness and wanted me to kiss his ouchy. Then he looked at me and said, "There."
This seemed to solve the issue for him. I was so taken back that I did not now how to respond. Gavin at 3 years old came up with the solution of, "EYE FOR AN EYE" and then everything is even and no one is mad anymore.
I probably should have said something very wise at this point, to teach a life lesson, but I had nothing to say. So I am sure everyone is thinking of things I should have said, but it is to late now and I will have to wait for the next opportunity to spread adult wisdom.
