I am realizing that the little routines that we come to have in our everyday lives will, I hope, become memories that my children will always have with them. I often look back to when I was really young and my dad would do small things that would make us kids laugh or scream with excitement. One of those memories is of my dad being SUPER DAD. When all us kids were sitting in the kitchen, my dad would leap and fly out of the room. To me a 5 or 6 year old this seemed very really and for a long time I thought my dad could fly.
Well, I realized last night that Paul has planted a nice memory for Gavin. Every night after family prayer, Gavin will shout, "I want to ride the elephant." At this point he will run and leap on Paul with delight and anticipation and he will get to ride the elephant all the way down the hall and onto his bed. This started out as an easy way to transition Gavin into going to bed mode, but I think I look forward to it almost as much as Gavin does.
